I left a wick of an inch on my first candle, but the flame burnt out before it reached the beeswax. I thought there was a problem with the wicks, so I contacted Candleology. Their customer service got back to me in one day and explained that my wick was too long, and needed to be ½”.I recommend putting that important information on the instruction page for us newbies. The back of the page has a QR code for “recipes” but you need to give your name, phone number, and e-mail address to access them. (see photos)The purple candle in the video used a full sheet of 8”x 8” beeswax.. The turquoise candle (one inch in height) took a half of a sheet.Candleology beeswax is among the most expensive on Amazon, but they do have excellent customer service.

This candle kit is so easy it is almost fool proof. Literally press the wick in to the wax (I tied a knot just in case and roll. The wax is pliable enough to roll so my fears of cracking or breaking was unfounded. I snipped off a corner on the inside roll to press on to the end of the taper to avoid fraying and am pleased that it cuts as easily as paper if you want to play with sizes and there is plenty of wick to go around. this would be an easy project for children as well.

I used to buy beeswax candle-making sets like from the now-defunct Magic Cabin; this one is comparable in both price and quality. I got the 7-color set to have on hand for our next family get-together at Thanksgiving—we like to make decorated taper candles as a family activity, then burn them during the holiday feast. This is a great set for that purpose, with a rainbow range of colors that can be mixed and matched to work for virtually any season or holiday. These sheets have well-defined honeycomb texturing and at ordinary room temp are malleable and easy to cut, press, and roll. Do crimp the wick into the inner fold as tightly as possible; then you can ease up on pressure a bit to continue rolling so as not to press the texture out of the wax surface—but don’t ease up too much, as if the roll is very loose the finished candles will burn too fast and unevenly. (But rolled candles will always burn considerably faster than solid tapers.)If you want a candle in every color but also want to decorate them, you can cut a strip an inch or two wide off one edge of each sheet and reserve those for cutting out decorative pieces, then roll the trimmed sheets either the same height but thinner, or the same width but shorter, whichever you prefer. Once rolled, the bottom inch or so can be pressed tighter if needed to fit a taper candleholder.Bottom line: Fun activity for all ages, makes beautiful, sweet-smelling candles.
